The Foundation
The Moontower Foundation is a private art foundation based in Bad König in the southern Odenwald region of Hesse, Germany. It was founded by the internationally renowned artist Rebecca Horn, who passed away on September 6, 2024. The foundation has been appointed as the sole heir to her entire artistic estate and since then bears full responsibility for the preservation, care, research, and continued dissemination of her work.
With this role as heir, the foundation’s mandate is intentionally broad. The Moontower Foundation not only safeguards a significant artistic oeuvre but also continues Rebecca Horn’s artistic thinking. This includes, in particular, the promotion of emerging artistic positions as well as the support of educational and exchange formats that were formative for the artist herself. In this context, the foundation is involved, among other things, in programs such as the DAAD Artist-in-Berlin and the HFBK Hamburg, where Rebecca Horn studied.
The Moontower Foundation understands its role as one of responsible stewardship: preserving the work, making it accessible for research and the public, while at the same time providing impulses for future generations of artists.
The location in the Odenwald was chosen deliberately. It is both the birthplace and home of the artist and combines a tranquil natural setting with good connections to cities such as Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Heidelberg, and Mannheim. The Moontower Foundation represents a place of focus, continuity, and long-term responsibility for an important artistic legacy.
The spatial structure of the Moontower Foundation includes exhibition spaces, a studio, a physical archive, and a digital archive currently under development, enabling the systematic documentation and future accessibility of the oeuvre. A central long-term project is the development of a comprehensive work database that documents the entire body of work on a scholarly basis and makes it internationally referable.
A particular focus lies on the technical maintenance of the works. The often mechanically and technically complex sculptures and installations by Rebecca Horn are maintained, repaired, and restored in the foundation’s own workshop. These tasks are carried out by a specialized in-house team with many years of experience in handling kinetic, material-intensive, and technically demanding artworks. In addition, the foundation undertakes external restoration and maintenance projects for similarly complex artistic works.
Exhibitions are also conceived and realized from Bad König. The foundation is responsible for curatorial concepts, organizational and logistical processes, transportation, as well as the technical installation and dismantling—both at its own location and in close collaboration with national and international museums, institutions, and galleries.
